Commencement of the main trial in the case of Željko Mejakić and Others

Commencement of the main trial in the case of Željko Mejakić and Others, who are charged with Crimes against humanity, has been scheduled for 20 December 2006, starting at 9.30am in courtroom 7.

The indictment alleges that the Accused directly participated in the systematic imprisonment of non-Serb civilians in the Omarska, Keraterm and Trnopolje camps.  This allegedly occured in the context of a widespread and systematic attack against the non-Serb population of the Prijedor area, from April 1992 until the end of 1992, carried out by the Army of the Republic of Srpska, Territorial defence, police and paramilitary units.

This case has been referred to the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) pursuant to a decision of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.  The Accused were transfered to BiH on 9 May 2006.
