Verdict to be handed down in the case of Marko Samardžija

On Friday, 3 November 2006, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina will hand down the first instance verdict in the case of Marko Samardžija, which is being processed before Section I for War Crimes. The verdict hearing will take place in courtroom 4 at 10:00 pm.

The accused is charged with the criminal offences of Crimes against humanity.
It is alleged that, on 10 July 1992, in his capacity as commander of the 3rd company of the Sanica Battalion within the 17th Light Infantry Brigade, the accused gave an order that Bosniak inhabitants from Brkići, Municipality of Ključ, leave their houses, and then separated men from women and children.
As further alleged in the indictment, the accused ordered women to go towards the elementary school in the village of Biljani, while men between the ages of 18 and 60 were taken to the same school, where they were first locked in classrooms and the Dom kulture facility, and subsequently executed in groups of 5 to 10.  The rest of the men, as alleged in the indictment, were beaten and subsequently placed on buses which were used to transport the remaining civilians to the location of Lanište, and executed.
The main trial in this case commenced on 1 February 2006.  The trial panel held a total of 23 hearings with total of more than 118 hours in the course of the main trial.  The defence will deliver its closing arguments tomorrow, at 10.00am in courtroom 7.
